A newly-formed group is using Election Day to announce plans to gauge interest in establishing home rule and the county executive form of government in Sangamon County.
The announcement from Sangamon for Government Reform said petitions will be circulated to place an advisory referendum asking voters if they favor establishing an elected chief executive officer to oversee departments and manage daily county operations.
The committee said Cook County is the only Illinois county operating with home rule and a chief executive officer, while Will and Champaign counties use a chief executive officer without home rule.
The committee’s website is sangamonforgovernmentreform.com.
