Everyday new slang gets introduced all the time, and it’s hard work trying to remember all the things these kids are saying.
But with the introduction of new things, it can mean the death of the old. So, here’s a list of old sayings that your grandparents used to love, that are slowly disappearing.
1. “The bee’s knees” . . . It meant something was excellent, in the 1920s.
2. “Now you’re cooking with gas” . . . This is a compliment that began in the 1930s as an ad slogan for gas stoves.
3. “No comments from the peanut gallery” . . . This was made popular by “Howdy Doody”. And refers to the cheapest seats in Vaudeville theaters.
4. “Don’t get your knickers in a twist” . . . Does anyone still wear knickers?
5. “Mind your P’s and Q’s” . . . It’s a reminder to behave, but a lot of people disagree on what P and Q stand for. The main theory is that, when written, p’s and q’s look similarly, so you have to pay attention, so you don’t mess them up.
6. “Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades” . . . It’s a clever way of saying that “almost” isn’t good enough.
7. “Goodness gracious, great balls of fire” . . . The 1957 song by Jerry Lee Lewis was great, but the saying went the way of the dodo.
8. “You make a better door than a window” . . . This was Grandpa’s passive-aggressive way of saying, “I can’t see the game, you’re blocking the TV.”
